Kelvin Gastelum reacts to his now-canceled title fight against Robert Whittaker at UFC 234.
A few hours ago, a middleweight title fight between champion Robert Whittaker and No. 4 ranked contender Kelvin Gastelum was set for the main event of UFC 234. Then, the unthinkable happened.
Shortly before the pay-per-view card was set to begin, ESPN’s Brett Okamoto reported the devastating news of Whittaker being out of the fight due to hernia located in his abdomen that would require a surgical procedure.
Of course, many wondered what would happen to his opponent, Gastelum, who earned this title opportunity after defeating the likes of former champion Michael Bisping and Ronald “Jacare” Souza in back-to-back fights.
Gastelum released a statement on Instagram regarding the fight after the news of Whittaker’s injury broke. Understandably upset by the turn of events, Gastelum still remained positive about the next moves to come in his career.
“With much sorrow I write that my fight for the middleweight title is off,” wrote Gastelum. “I’m sorry to everyone that was expecting this great fight, Family, friends, and followers from around the world. God has a reason for doing things and I firmly believe his plans are much bigger and better than I can even imagine. I’m so torn about this situation. A lifetime of pursuit to be able to reach this level and I hope none of these efforts will go in vain.”
On Twitter, Gastelum also wished Whittaker effectively in his restoration.
Presently, there isn’t a phrase on when the battle between Whittaker and Gastelum can be rescheduled. The brand new fundamental occasion of the cardboard can be a three-round middleweight battle between Anderson Silva and Israel Adesanya, which was initially the co-main occasion.
